St. Augustine grass disease problems originate in the root system. Take-all root rot (Gaeumannomyces graminis var. graminis) occurs under high moisture or stress conditions. When symptoms are noticeable above ground, the disease is usually in an advanced stage. Following proper cultural practices is the best defense against this disease READ MORE
The most serious insect on zoysiagrass is the Hunting billbug. Billbugs feed on roots, causing the turf to die in irregular-shaped patches. The damage most often occurs in the fall and spring when populations are high and when damage may be misdiagnosed as dormancy. Stems and rhizomes break easily, have irregular feeding marks, and the turf will not hold together if cut. Most damage occurs on infertile or dry soil. If 10–12 billbugs are seen per square foot, control may be necessary.
Periods of extended drought bring on dormancy and an unnaturally dark or tan color, but Bahia withstands these stresses better than other grasses. It's especially well-suited to large, less maintained areas with limited irrigation. Once stresses subside, Bahiagrass lawns bounce back quickly.
Bermuda Grass cultivars commonly used in golf course and athletic field settings require higher levels of maintenance than other grasses typically used for home lawns. They have poor tolerance to many insect, disease, and nematode pests, which can limit their use. They grow very aggressively from stolons (aboveground stems) and rhizomes (belowground stems) and can rapidly invade flower and landscape beds. This aggressive growth also fosters thatch buildup. Bermudagrasses will generally not maintain green color in cold temperatures and have poor shade tolerance.
Carpet grass is most susceptible to brown (large) patch disease (especially in warm, wet-soil conditions) and to mole crickets, army worms, sod web worms, and nematodes If insect or disease problems are suspected, talk with your county Extension agent about submitting a soil sample for analysis.
Weed problems are rare because carpetgrass grows vigorously and covers well. Carpetgrass is sensitive to many herbicides. In addition, most herbicides are not labeled for carpetgrass. Contact your local Extension agent if you have questions about pesticides.
Following proper lawn-management practices is the best means of preventing and controlling problems in carpet grass. If you continue to have problems growing carpet grass in an area, you may need to choose another species.
Brown patch or large patch is a fungal disease that shows up during or after extended periods of wet weather in the spring, summer and fall. Yellow circles ranging from several inches to feet in diameter are the first symptoms of brown patch, followed by large circles of thin grass. The disease continues to cause grass decline even after it has been cured. Prevention is the best method of addressing brown patch.
