Raccoons are usually classified as a pest species due to their habits of living in human
dwellings. The most common habitats in a human dwelling include Raccoons living in the
attic & living in the chimney. Raccoons can also become a major nuisance by tipping over
your garbage cans and by alarming/startling your pets.
Determining if you have Raccoons Living Amongst You
Raccoons may leave claw marks along a soffit or fascia when entering a structure. Paw
prints on downspouts of gutters can indicate the presence of raccoons. Raccoons may also
access rooftops from overhanging vegetation. Raccoons have become extremely
comfortable around humans. They will readily feed on pet foods left for domestic animals.
What Do Raccoons Eat?
Raccoons naturally feast on insects, fish, amphibians, berries, fruit, and nuts, raccoons will
eat anything humans eat. That’s why you might see them rummaging through your garbage
cans or your garden. They will also eat any pet food you might leave out overnight.
Why Do Raccoons Live in Attics?
The attic is usually warm and dry and easily can go outside to get food and water. Attics are
often in close proximity to the food sources of urbanized animals - garbage cans, pet food,
and other human-influenced food sources. An attic is like a big, hollow tree or cave - it's a
great place to live! Additionally, female animals have a strong denning instinct when they are
pregnant, and instinctively seek out safe, enclosed areas. It's very common for a female
animal about to bear young to find its way into an attic. In fact, and I'm probably going to
repeat it multiple times here, the most common scenario with raccoons in an attic is that of a
female with a litter of young. The primary reason a raccoon enters an attic in the first place is
so that she can give birth to and raise her young pups. Thus, most incidents of raccoons in
attic are in spring, from February – May. Raccoons will chew or tear holes into various parts of your home to gain access into your attic or walls. Once in the attic they will defecate, urinate, cause damage to your attic insulation, and birth their kits (baby raccoons). When raccoons determine that your attic is a safe place for them seek shelter and babies are successfully raised in your home they will return year after year to raise their young.
How Can Raccoons Get into Your Home?
Soffit-These sections are usually located where an upper and lower roof meet and make for
ideal raccoon entry points. While using the roof for leverage, raccoons use their shoulders to
open flimsy soffits made from thin aluminum or plastic. Once the soffit is opened, they can
easily gain access to the entire attic.
Roof Vents- The vents on your roof are designed to allow for proper air circulation in your
attic. Unfortunately, raccoons can feel the air escaping from your attic, and that destroying
the vent cover will give them access to the warmth inside. Again, plastic or aluminum vent
covers are no match for powerful raccoons.
Chimney's- The bottom of your chimney is an ideal place for a mother raccoon to nurse her
babies. Chimneys mimic hollowed out tree cavities, allowing adult raccoons to easily
shimmy up and down in search of shelter and protection. Once inside, raccoons will make
their home on top your fireplace’s damper. The chimney caps you can purchase at hardware
stores do little to prevent raccoons from getting inside. These are just a few areas that Raccoons can get into your home.
